Dear Governor Bob Riley

Alabama Waterfowl Association, Inc. (AWA) represents the 12,000 Alabama waterfowl hunters and a thousand more Alabama bird watchers. AWA funded and sponsored the relocation, banding and release of over 2,700 Giant Canada Geese from 1987 to 1990. This re-introduced the Canada geese that were lost in the Tennessee River Valley of North Alabama. Also, AWA has banded and released over 160,000 hand reared wild mallards since 1988.

I would like to let you know that the Alabama Waterfowl Association, Inc. deserves to be included in any pay outs to conservation or environmental organization. On behalf of the AWA our board of directors we would like to ask for assistance on seeking compensation. The present administration and EPA has been alarming slow in deploying assets to the Gulf Region to help out British Petroleum. I realize BP is responsible, but the federal government has an obligation to protect our natural resources from destruction by this accident.

I know that many waterfowl including the pelican, gulls, sandpipers, willets, rails, granules, duck and geese depend on the coastal wetlands and marshes to reproduce. This area also provides over-wintering habitat for all of the North American songbirds and waterfowl. AWA just had an AWA banded hen mallard reported trapped and died in Grand Isle, Louisiana. AWA has had several band reports of mallard that we have reared, banded and released reported in the coastal marsh regions of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana

I would appreciate any help in getting BP and the government to help with restoration, waterfowl and other bird re-population and think outside the box to accomplish this. AWA is more experienced than any other conservation group in mallard population enhancement. (See AWAs website http://alabamawaterfowl.org ).

Sincerely,

Jerry Davis, Founder and CEO
